Best explored on foot, this bustling town is the provincial capital of Phuket. Centuries ago, Chinese merchants settled here, and tin mining and rubber growing led to its prosperity. Contact with Portuguese traders led to the development of a particular style of architecture known as Sino-Portuguese. The town offers many tourist facilities including accommodation, restaurants and some of the best shopping on the island. You will also find Government Offices, the Tourist Authority of Thailand, Thai Airways, and the main Post Office here as well.

Phuket Town Central Market
Ongoing
What better place than a market to experience the color, confusion and variety of Thai life? Central to the market is the food section - fresh poultry, meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers vie for attention. Enjoy the aroma of herbs and spices and the vast array of unusual products. On the periphery are numerous small stores selling fake designer clothing, travel bags, kitchenware, electrical goods, silk, handicrafts and a host of other goods all at extraordinarily low prices, and you can still bargain these down! You will find the market west of the traffic circle.

Phuket Town Night Markets
Ongoing
5:00PM
For something really different, try the night market in Phuket Town. Surrounding the Robinson Department Store, it offers a wealth of Thai, Chinese and Muslim cooked meals and sweets. Stalls are set up from about 5pm and it is the perfect place to try inexpensive curries, noodles and fried rice. The building was originally built to house the fresh food market, but local residents decide they preferred their old one, hence it became the place for the hot food vendors.
