Unzen is the name of a supposedly dormant volcanic peak that stands 1,359 meters tall and lies about an hour east of Nagasaki City. Although the peak is dormant, and hikers are allowed to climb it, a nearby peak spewed ash and smoke during the 1990s, prompting officials to ban climbing there. Unzen is also famous as a hot-spring resort area. There are many excellent onsen in the area, and the views from the elevations are quite impressive.
