The Town Hall was opened in 1877 and with its imposing Gothic-style façade is one of the city's major landmarks. One of its courtyards , complete with cobbled pavement and gas lamps , has frequently been used for television costume dramas. The interior with its wonderful sweeping staircase is just as formidable while the Great Hall contains a selection of paintings by Ford Madox Brown. Guided tours are available on request and rooms can be hired out , book signings, church meetings and old fashioned tea dances all take place here from time to time.

Guided Tours of the Town Hall is arranged by Manchester Visitor Centre. The Town Hall has a spectacular interior as well as a striking exterior. It features Ford Madox Brown's masterpiece—the Great Hall which has 12 large murals. It also showcases the vaulted corridors, tile mosaic work, and the three stone spiral staircases. Dazzle: Contemporary Jewellery Fair

Dazzle hosts four shows per year in four major UK cities: London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Established in 1981, the company operates as a showcase for new and well known designers to sell their jewelery. Previous buyers have included the late Princess of Wales, Whoopi Goldberg, Salman Rushdie and Dame Judi Dench, so its worth popping along in case you spot a celebrity, if nothing else. The range of crafts on sale has expanded over the years and now encompasses watches, small boxes and other trinket items as well as their trademark jewelery. Admission is free.

Stockport Beer & Cider Festival

This CAMRA organized annual event - which runs for three days around the end of May or the start of June - held at the magnificent main Town Hall building, just gets bigger and better every year. They now even host the National Cider and Perry Championships.As well as a selection of over 100 different beers and ciders there is live music every night, hot and cold food throughout the day and even a family room so you can let the kids join in the fun. Note that this is always an exceptionally busy event, so get there early.
