Built under the order of Catherine the Great for her grandson (the future Tsar Alexander I), Alexander Palace has seen many faces come and go. Once the principle residence of Russia's last Tsar Nicholas II and his family, it became a museum after their execution. In 1941, it became a Nazi headquarters; and during the 1950s, a top secret Soviet missile tracking location. Today, half the palace remains occupied by the military and the other half is the personal apartments for Nicholas II and his family.
