This bright, colorful, energetic festival is held every year from October 7th to October 9th in honor of the patron god of Nagasaki. The three-day festival, considered one of Nagasaki's "Big Three," is held at the city's most prestigious shrine, Suwa Jinja. If you follow the 277 steps toward the shrine, halfway up there is a plaza where festival participants dance while carrying a long paper dragon reminiscent of Chinese festivals. On the final morning of the festival, the people will begin chanting, "Motte Koi!"--which means "encore.
