Established at the turn of the 18th century, the Societätstheater was the first civic theatre to be opened in Germany. All other theatres were royal theatres and not open to the general public. The theatre is small, both in terms of physical size and number of actors, but the performances cover the whole spectrum of traditional theatre, cabaret, dance and recitals. The programme also includes performances by guest ensembles.
