A stroll from the Largo do Senado towards the inner harbor along the Avenida Almeida Ribeiro is sure to make anyone's head spin. This section of the street is pretty much wall-to-wall gold shops. The shop windows are filled with gleaming pieces of ornate jewellery, mostly made of 24-carat gold, which is preferred by most Asians who buy gold as an investment. As gold is imported into Macau duty-free, prices are astonishingly low. Solid gold jewelery is generally sold by weight, which is measured in taels, whilst precious gems should be bargained for.
