Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jul 27 2007 my favorite hotel in thailand I have stayed at the Royal Orchid several times in the past when i regularly traveled to Bangkok and beyond. Unfortunately my last trip was 10 years ago but i plan to return this December and i know the quality of service will be the same! (from 1985 through 1996 it was always superb). On one occasion i was returning from Chiang Mai where my flight had been delayed for 3 hours( no A/C at the airport) and the taxi trip from the Bangkok airport to the hotel was particularly arduous; being over-heated and tired i just knew that they probably didn't have my reservation. As i limped in i pleadingly asked if they knew i was coming. Incredibly a soft bell rang out, my bags were whisked away and the receptionist had 3 employees directing me to the Tower elevator which they were holding open for my journey to a beautiful river-view hideaway. My "butler" greeted me to advise that i could check in whenever it was convenient for me and he would be available at any time if i needed anything! In 1995 my wife and i spent 3 days at the "Orchid" and had the great pleasure to dine at breakfast with the Tower Manager Pichit Phariyaniticupt a gracious and interesting man who made our stay exceptional. If you plan to stay in Bangkok, by all means get a hotel on the river (with a view )and you can't go wrong at the Royal Orchid. Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Jul 22 2007 What service The service was the best part of the 8 nights stay in the executive suite. Lounge had a full wet bar with staff that remembered my name. The Thai dance with buffet dinner is a 'must to go'. The view was good only on some days because of weather being gloomy and the river water dirty. Travel best by taxi because you have to take the ferry down the river that is infrequent enough and stops at 1900. The hotel needs major major renovations and update.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Apr 28 2007 Great Hotel I enjoyed my stay at the Sheraton. The service was wonderful and everyone there welcomed my boys and I with open arms. The rooms were modern and clean with breaktaking views of the Chao Praya River. The restaurants was a bit pricey but the service and food was very good. It was also nice to sit by the terrace and take in the Bangkok air while watching the boats sail by. The hotel has 2 pools. It was very relaxing to sit by the pool with the view of the river behind it and the water was warm and clean to swim all day. Though one night my son begged to go swimming after dinner and threw up in the lap pool. Sorry Sheraton! There's also a peacock behind the pool area, which my boys got a kick out of. We also took a boat ride around Bangkok though at one point I got frightend when 2 guys from the floating market sailed up to us and was very pushy trying to sell souvenirs. Overall, the 3 of us enjoyed our stay and wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
Reviewed by: Sai from on Apr 19 2007 Great Place to Stay First visit to the hotel and I loved it. The staff was helpful and always polite. The room was comfortable, clean and located in a great location. There is nothing I disliked about this hotel. The dinner buffet was outstanding. I used the hotel's river shuttle to get to public transportation.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Apr 11 2007 Roaches in my Executive Suite Roaches in our executive suite!! They moved us to a suite on a higher floor, on day 2 we saw a roach walking across the floor. Please hear me: these roaches were comfortable, walking around like they didnt have to worry about dying. There was moldy grout in the old marble tiles in the bathroom. The views were incredible. We stayed at the Westin Grande Sukhumvit on the way back to the states after 5 days on Koh Samui; it was a much nicer recently refurbished hotel, with more luxurious rooms, in the heart of Bangkok. Plus its located right near a sky train stop. Versus, the hotels on the river which attract the Tourist Harassers (you; you want tuk tuk; you want taxi; where you go; blah blah blah).
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on May 11 2006 THE BEST PLACE TO STAY This is the ultimate romantic location. Right on the Chao Praya river, just about 5 river-bus stops from the renowned Wat Pho and Grand Palace sites, it has two seperate pool areas one with a pool bar and jaccuzzi ... sauna, gym, several restaurants and a few GREAT restaurants within a stones throw (Silom Village and the one just across the river - forgot the name! - are great and romantic places to go.
