Back to Zona Colonial Zona Colonial I stayed in a hotel above a store. The view of was nice lots of restaraunts and clothing store. But there were way too many people out asking for money in Zona Colonial. I was quite irritated and had a few words for a couple of people who said they watched my car scam while I was away and demanded pasos. It was a rental and I could care less about the car. They have nothing better to do but look for visitors. Once your away from that area the better off you are and the more money you save. Stay away from Boca Chica thats even worse. If you don't want to be bothered stay at a resort.
Reviewed by: John H from on Jul 09 2008 Beautiful Old school feel I loved walking around the Zona with my boyfriend. The architecture is very old, and has such a rich history with it. The people are fascinating. You can even see the shore/ horizon line that the natives saw w/ Columbus' ships. It's amazing to see part of the Americas' history.
Reviewed by: Lor from on May 26 2008 First City of the New World I loved the history of the place..The colonial zone has a long list of firsts for the new world, from first catherdral to first university, hospital and paved street, these are things you don't get taught in school.
Reviewed by: A Yahoo! Contributor from on Dec 13 2007 The Colonial Santo Domingo - A step back in time I loved the colonial section of Santo Domingo because of many things but the architecture just stands out. Its old you know but not Ancient. It shows you a life 500 years ago that was in some ways like ours today and in others was its amazing how far we have come. The old church, now a monument with a fresco on the ceiling of the cistine chapel in Italy. On the walls are the names of the hero's in Dominican History. The beautiful Caribbean lies just off the shores of the monument to Columbus.
Reviewed by: Paul from on Feb 03 2007 Nice to See I like Santo Domingo in general but do not feel especially safe there. There are purse snatchers everywhere and every tourist with a camera is a potential target. At night we were advised not to stray to far from Zona Colonial and even then we wittnessed some "interesting" police tactics...questioning a man who parked his car in the "wrong" place .....(his kids were with him). The police had a swat team at his car door within minutes piling out of the small buss with machine guns, harrassing him.

Reviewed by: Steve from on Jan 05 2007 Best of back in the day All the historic monuments, artifacts and architecture were fascinating. I loved every part of la Zona Colonial. This was an excellent experience that people of all ages will enjoy. It may sound boring to some because it's based on history, buy it really isnt. Its a fun twist on history and makes u feel like you were really there. Especially if you hire someone to help you.
