If you are traveling to Merida from the city of Valera, a few kilometres after passing through the Pico El Aguila you will see a small hill with a huge statue of a woman pointing towards the sky. This is the Monumento-Parque La Loca Luz Caraballo, in honour of the mother who went insane after losing her five children, according to the story written by the fine Venezuelan poet Andres Eloy Blanco. Her image and memory remain so strikingly vivid in the minds of the people, that not only did they create this monument-park, but the nearby museum is dedicated to the same literary character as well.
