Lubeck did not have a suitable place for events such as concerts and conventions for a long time, so on these occasions the largest cinema hall in the city had to be used. Presumably it would still be this way if the State of Schleswig-Holstein had not promised to help. Between 1992 and 1994 a highly modern, multi-purpose hall was built in the former harbour area on the Wallhalbinsel peninsula by Meinhard von Gerkan. The acoustic quality of the main hall which seats over 2200 is regarded as brillant and the glass rotunda foyer is very popular for events like exhibitions and forums.
