The A.C.T. has been resident at the Geary Theater since 1965. This award-winning repertory company, the training ground for actors such as Rene Auberjonois and Annette Benning, presents new works by such acclaimed playwrights as August Wilson and Tom Stoppard and takes innovative approaches to its revivals of the classics. A past, superb, production of Tartuffe was updated to the American south, set in the 50s, and featured a mostly African-American cast. Its annual musical version of A Christmas Carol is a San Francisco tradition. The Geary Theater itself is a jewel of unpretentious elegance. See their website to purchase tickets.

Rock 'n' Roll - Extended by Popular Demand Sep 11th, 2008 to Oct 18th, 2008
The West Coast premiere production will run one additional week through October 18. A rapturous, decades-spanning tale of Prague's rock revolution, Rock 'n' Roll follows the passions and politics of a Marxist professor in Cambridge and his Rolling Stones–obsessed protege fighting for freedom in Soviet–dominated Czechoslovakia. The A.C.T and Huntington Theatre Company coproduction marks the first presentation of Stoppard's play by an American company after the Broadway run of the London production that broke box office records and received four 2008 Tony Award nominations. Rock 'n' Roll blends Stoppard's signature use of language and ideas with the raw energy of rock music to become his most personal work to date. The New York Times' Ben Brantley has called Rock 'n' Roll "arguably Stoppard's finest play," commenting, "Stoppard treats the characters of Rock' n' Roll with a deep affection I've never encountered from him before."
