When French troops had occupied Lübeck in 1806, the soldiers eagerly confiscated, requisitioned or simply plundered goods. They would also surely have ransacked Gothmund - had they found it. But the fishermen's village upon the Trave river was so secluded that the French dragoons passed it in a distance of some hundred metres without even knowing. The place has kept this isolation to the present day, and even its appearance hasn't changed much for a long time now. Fishermen's huts with thatched roofs stand along a "main street" completely closed to motor traffic. It is like an idyllic picture from times long gone. And just like the dragoons 200 years ago, the motorists speeding along the nearby Travemünder Allee don't have the slightest idea of the nice village hiding on the Trave shore...
