A long time ago, the docks of the Holstenhafen harbor were crowded with sailing ships from all over the world, and a forest of masts stretched into the sky. You can still feel a little bit of this atmosphere when walking down the Untertrave between Beckergrube and Engelsgrube today, as the old veterans of the seas lie here, in the so-called Oldtimerhafen, or veterans harbour. You never know how many dark wood and shining brass you might see here, because all vessels are the property of private owners, who anchor here traditionally. Normally, the largest number of ships can be found between October and April, when sailing is not very amusing. And many of the proud captains enjoy people admiring their sailing ship - if you ask politely, there's a fair chance you might be able to get on board.
