When starting at the Holstenbrücke bridge and then walking up An der Obertrave, you soon get caught by an atmosphere totally different from the one you experience in the shadow of the high gable houses, which remind one of the rich merchants. These houses are smaller and more modest, but they also give the impression of a kind of romantic security that isn't found very often. The river boatmen once lived here, and whoever wants to explore their world a bit may do so - countless little so-called Gänge, or corridors, lead into the labyrinth-like inner parts of the old blocks. A visit (please pay respect to the residents) impressively shows what the old Lübeck was like away from the residences of merchants and members of council. However, the odd and strange-looking building An der Obertrave 19-21 may confidently be ignored - it's an air raid shelter from 1942 which has only half-heartedly been masked as an "old" building.
