Johann Füchting was an important man in 17th Centurty Lübeck. He was not only a merchant, but also a member of the city council - and most of all he was rich. Maybe he had a guilty conscience, seeing as he made most of his money in the murderous Thirty Years War, but he decided to establish a charitable foundation, giving a third of his fortune - some 266,000 Lübeck Marks, the equivalent of a million today. With these funds, Füchtings Hof (or Füchting´s Yard) was built in 1639, a residential complex for the impoverished widows of seamen and merchants. In its time, Füchtings Hof was comfortable and spacious, Johann Füchting was generous, but he was not very modest - his guilded coat of arms is still above the Baroque entrance gate - you can´t miss it. Everyone could clearly see who the generous donor was. In the house at the end of the yard, a very special treasure can be found - the former Vorsteherzimmer, or director´s room, still with its complete original furniture dating from the 17th century.
Füchtings Hof is still a residential area today, so please respect this fact when visiting the picturesque ensemble. For a visit to the beautiful Vorsteherzimmer, please contact the tourist information at Breite Straße 62 via e-mail, fax or phone.disabled access.
