Some things are made for eternity, and some are permanently changing. The Koberg square belongs to the latter category as it has changed its name so often during the centuries. Sometimes, old documents tell us about the Kauperg, then it is called the Kaufberg and by the end of the 18th century "Kuhberg" (which means "cow mountain") was considered fitting, though no connection to any kind of livestock existed. In the late 19th century Lübeck was so proud of its very own poet Emanuel Geibel that a statue was erected here and the the place re-named the Geibelplatz. The artist is virtually forgotten today, and his statue stands secluded at the edge of the square which is named Koberg - for now. Totally untouched by the maze of names, the Koberg displays one of north Germany's most beautiful architectural ensembles, formed by representative town houses (17th to 19th century) on two sides, with St. James' and the Heiligen-Geist-Hospital as worthy additions on the other side. And this will, unlike the name, not be subject to any changes...
