The stretched building in the cathedrals shadow has seen a past full of changes and different functions. Built in 1594, it got an impressive Renaissance face, yet it was only meant to serve as the municipal grain warehouse. Later it became the weaponry for the municipal military, or Zeughaus. After that, wool was stored here, and since the beginning of the 20th century it was the headquarters of police. Today, the building is home to a collection of ethnology articles, consisting of more than 25,000 items from non-European cultures. Because of this quantity most of the items are displayed in temporary exhibitions dealing with ethnographical themes as well as problems of the Third World.
