The museum of nature and environment has a quite challenging task - as the only museum in Schleswig Holstein, it provides a complete overview of landscape, animals and habitats in the northernmost states and their coastal waters. Prepared examples of all native mammals and birds are displayed here, as well as living fishes and reptiles. Special attention is paid to the insects, especially the bees. A glass beehive, populated by living insects and combined with a bee-dance-scale, provides a possibility of understanding their communication through dance. Also a part of the exhibition is the geological past of Schleswig Holstein, with whale fossils which are ten million years old.
