Erected between 1251-1350, St. Marien church, with its 160m-high steeples, was intended as a display of the city's prosperity and became a prototype for numerous other churches in the Baltic region. Originally Catholic, St. Marien became Protestant as a result of the Reformation in the 16th century.

Märchenwald (Fairytale Forest) Nov 23rd, 2009 to Dec 23rd, 2009
The Märchenwald at Lübeck's St. Mary's Church has been a Christmas season activity for more than 30 years. Among hundreds of illuminated Christmas trees more than 20 fairy-tale scenes of the Grimm brothers stories are staged with their main characters, some of which can even move. Both children and their parents enjoy a visit at the fairy-tale forest, as many Lübeck's also came here when they were children themselves. Sweets and snacks are available at the food stalls. Admission is free.
