Rynek Starego Miasta is the true heart of the Old Town, and until the end of the 18th century it was the heart of all of Warsaw. Here the representatives of guilds and merchants met in the Town Hall (demolished in 1817), fairs and the occasional execution were held. The four sides of this vast (90 by 73 m or 295 by 240 ft) square are named after the most famous 18th century Polish parliamentarians. Destroyed during World War II, the square was rebuilt to look as it did in the 17th century when it was mostly inhabited by rich merchant families. Bustling with life, full of little cafes and street performers, it's a good place to stop for a while to sit and admire the architecture and to taste some local beer and food in one of the many restaurants located here. Enjoy free open air jazz music on the square during summer months at the Old Town Jazz Festival.
