Built in 1922, the Castro Theater is San Francisco's only remaining movie palace. When not playing host to film festivals, this 1,550 seat house runs a repertory calendar heavy on film classics; there is no better place to see The Wizard of Oz. The interior reflects the elegance of a bygone era with its red velvet seats and walls featuring molded plaster and frescoed detailing. The fanciful ceiling, from which hangs an imposing art deco chandelier, is designed to evoke the interior of a Bedouin tent. Completing the effect is a mighty Wurlitzer organ which plays between evening shows. See website for show times, calendar of events, ticketing info and more.
