Antique Tow Trucks at the International Towing & Recovery Museum

clock 2009-01-01 to 2009-12-31

In today's hustle-bustle world, getting towed is generally perceived to be a bad thing. Once upon a time, tow trucks were considered heroic. This exhibition collects a number of early specimens, from the tow truck's heyday. On display are a 1913 Locomobile, a 1947 GMC "Bubble Nose," and a Chevy with a Holmes 515 & 540 Cradle. Recovery buffs (and auto buffs in general) will surely get a kick out of these towin' behemoths.

No, it's not a joke. This really is a museum of tow trucks and a whole lot more. In 1916, Chattanoogan, Ernest Holmes, sold the first tow truck for commercial use. In fact, the entire towing industry began in the Scenic City. A very interesting array of tow trucks from the 20th century fill this museum. Exhibits that chronicle the history of the industry are part of the tour. See website for further information.
