Founded in 1962, this independently-run theater is known for its intelligently produced plays, many of which feature striking social and political commentary. The Schaubühne was greatly influenced by Peter Stein, the revolutionary director of the 1960s, who turned it into one of Germany's leading theaters. The new generation of directors, grouped around Sasha Waltz and Thomas Ostermeier, promises to be equally revolutionary, yet only time will tell if they can live up to Peter Stein's towering example.
