The unglamorous commercial twin of Georgetown a ferry ride away, the old port of Butterworth used to handle significant volumes of exports of the Malay Peninsula from the days of early Penang but now revamped by the North Butterworth Container Terminal. Named after T. Butterworth, governor of Singapore and Malacca (1843-55), it is remembered for its ferries, which had brought many happy travelers to the pleasures and treasures on what older generations termed the "Island of Betel Nuts". An old fighter jet at the former base of the Royal Australian Air Force is another artifact for the memory.
