This shrine encloses a wooden pillar erected by King Rama I on April 21, 1782 that represents the founding of the new Bangkok capital. During his reign, five other idols were also added to the shrine. The spirit of the pillar is considered to be the city's guardian deity and receives the daily supplications of countless Thai worshipers. Out of gratitude for answered prayers, food, incense or a Lakhon (Thai drama and dance) are offered to the City Spirit.
