Eye-catching tiles in swirling waves floor the Largo do Senado (Senate Square), which provides the city's focal point and is the start of most people's exploration of Macau. From the central fountain, every glance falls upon stunning colonial architecture—the imposing Leal Senado, the Santa Casa da Misericordia, and finally Sao Domingos Church. A shady area, full of chatting old Macanese, also offers a tiny café for tourists to enjoy. Lanes leading away from the square unveil markets, grungy streets and rows of dusty mopeds.

Feast of the Drunken Dragon
May 21st, 2010
Drunken Dragon
The Feast of the Drunken Dragon might seem to many and especially to the cynical few, just another excuse for a booze up. Drunken dragons? What are you talking about? Actually, this is a great festival, free-spirited and roaring with energy. Observed on the eighth day of the fourth lunar month, the procession starts at the nearby Kuan Tai Temple when a group of inebriated fishermen stagger down the streets brandishing wooden dragons' heads and bodies. Some say the festival celebrates fertility, though there is nothing fertile about a boatload of inebriated fishermen.
