The first Friday through Sunday of June each year, the Tokasan Festival heralds summer and a change from heavy, double- and triple-layered kimono to lighter, cooler, single-layered, but still wonderfully colorful yukata robes. Booths on Chuo-dori tempt the streaming crowds with sweets, treats and games, traditional and otherwise. Enryuji, a combined Shinto temple and Buddhist shrine, is the center of the festivities. Make an offering, try your luck in lotteries and fortune telling, or maybe just breathe in the incense and carnival atmosphere. At night, beer gardens, dancing and taiko drumming fill nearby parks and the temple area.
