Discovered in 1954, the 43-metre-long wood boat in this special humidity-controlled pavilion next the to Pyramid of Cheops came from one of five boat pits next to the pyramid. Archaeologists spent years rebuilding the cedarwood solar barque, which matches those depicted in tomb paintings. In ancient Egyptian theology, such boats were used to transport the pharaoh through the underworld. Visitors must wear protective footwear provided at the museum. The pavilion also houses exhibits demonstrating the techniques used to build a solar barque, as well as some of the wood and ropes found in the pits.
