Often overlooked, this extensive collection of Islamic art was the brainchild of Khedive Tawfeek, son of Mohammed Ali Pasha, who in the late 19th century sought a museum to protect Islamic artefacts from destruction. The museum occupies the ground floor of a neo-Mameluke building and the entrance around the back can be easy to miss. Its quiet rooms contain a surprisingly good collection of art, ceramics, calligraphy, metalwork and woodwork. Some of the displays, such as heavy wood doors and Ottoman fountains, are quite large. Sadly, many of the exhibits are decaying and the baksheesh-hungry guards show little respect for them. See these treasures now before they disappear forever.

They may not be flying carpets but it would be wrong to not mention the beautiful designs fused with so many colors of these carpets and rugs used back in the day by the Arabs. This fascinating collection of carpets and rugs is worth the visit. May be you may get some ideas of a beautiful carpet to decorate the floor in your crib.

The collection of coins at this museum can be envied by most coin collectors. Coins from many a places like Persia, Transoxiana, Southern Arabia, North Africa and Andalusia. These coins put together from 658 A.D. are nothing less than a treasure. At this museum, certainly, every penny counts.

Weights, Stamps and Measures
Jan 1st, 2009 to Dec 31st, 2009
This collection may not be a big one but nevertheless its as significant as most of the other collections in the museums. The different types of weights made of glass, usually disc-shaped, were used to weigh spices, drugs and more. Also, the stamp collection put together from back in the day, is nothing but priceless.

Woodworks at the Museum of Islamic Art

Woodworks at the Museum of Islamic Art is something one would want in his or her own home. The designs and the beautifully crafted wooden works, which have been existing since 1250 A.D. may look old but yet it does personify the creativity of the past. Boxes, cupboards and more collected from the Egyptian history are great examples of of art to sum it up.
