This latter-day Haight Ashbury replaced Kabul as one of the 3K's on the backpacker trail through Asia (Kathmandu and Kuta Beach being the other two) in the early '80s. Today, this haven for travelers has become a little more trendy, but it is still the cheapest place to stay and shop in town. There are stores and stalls galore, selling anything from clothes to CDs and formal suits. You can also find several cheap guest houses, travel agents, used bookstores and restaurants, which show videos throughout the day. At night the street is closed to traffic.
