Satisfying Symphonic Experience
Since the mid-1990s, with the recruitment of a number of players from Eastern Europe, this semi-professional orchestra has achieved an impressive level of performance, delighting audiences with repertoire ranging from the Baroque to the present day. Currently the orchestra plays around 15 concerts a year, divided into four series, at the Christchurch Town Hall Main Auditorium. The programming includes the more serious Masterworks concerts, centring around a major symphonic work and concerto, and feature artists with international standing, such as Julian Lloyd Webber and Vladimir Kamirski. There are also the lighter and more varied programmes of the Proms.

The Christchurch Town Hall was opened in 1972, when its radical design, by local architects Warren and Mahoney, attracted some controversy. It is now an acknowledged masterpiece, still winning awards for its remarkable architecture. The Town Hall features six public areas, including the James Hay theatre and the main auditorium, which is famous for its stunning acoustics. A major feature of the auditorium, which can seat 2000 people, is the Rieger pipe organ. The Ferrier Fountain at the rear of the complex facing Victoria Park is reminiscent of a cluster of dandelion seeds, and has long been an icon of Christchurch.
