A majestic view of the lakes has attracted homebuilders throughout the ages to Aghadoe Hill. The hill's church and round tower date from the 10th century and further down the slope stands Parkavonear Castle. In 1215 Geraldine invaders erected a wooden structure here as they moved across Kerry. A stone tower house replaced this building at the end of the 13th century. Unusually for Ireland, the tower house had a circular double-ditch moat as part of its defense. The remains of the moat and two storeys of the building are still visible and accessible. The two storeys are still joined by a staircase within a wall, and the first floor has the remains of a fireplace. It is known locally as "The Bishop's Chair".
