This mountain pair was a place of pilgrimage for the ancient Tuatha De Danann. The legendary race occupied Ireland from about 1500 BC until the invasion of the Milesians. For the Tuatha De Danann, the Paps represented the breasts of Dana, a goddess who provided magical powers. A pyramid shaped burial chamber atop each of the mountains further emphasized this association.
A moderate circular walk takes you up and across both of the Paps, providing scenic views of both Cork and Kerry. In addition to the two stone cairns, there is a stone fort, heather-covered bog, and a mountain lake. The walk is eight miles (13 kilometres) long and should take approximately five hours. Although short, the climb can be quite steep at times. Walkers should be reasonably fit.NYC Best Hotel Deals: 50% Savings In New York!
