Back to National Portrait Gallery Great place to get away from crowds I visited the National Portrait Gallery/American Art Museum in May 2007 and was very impressed by the museum and it's beautiful old building from the 1850s that it is all housed in. The main perks of this museum was its location right above the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro stop and the fact that it is a lot less crowded than the other popular Mall museums. The galleries themselves are organized into small rooms and divided in half with one side of a floor dedicated to American Art and the other to the Portraits. I was around the Portrait Gallery for the most part and it was really nice seeing famous Americans honored along with providing a good summary of a portrait subject's background for proof as to why they were placed in the gallery. Do not miss the third floor Great Hall which is a highlight of the museum. Beautiful architecture up there. I also think the President portraits are worth seeing as well. Overall, this place was worth the time to see.

The completed renovation is a phenomenal accomplishment which brings exuberance to each of the various art forms. The color schemes selected in the various exhibits enhance the portraits and sculptures, and create a moving experience for the viewer. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit and plan to return very soon.
