With 170 acres of beautiful natural forest, this university is quite scenic and contains three miles of campus trails. Begun in 1959, as the Alaska Methodist University, it is a private, liberal arts college whose philosophy is "how you learn is as important as what you learn." This philosophy produces a much more "hands-on" approach to teaching students than is customary for a university.
