This, one of the oldest churches in Cairo, is built on the site where the Holy Family allegedly rested at the end of their journey to Egypt. Built in the fourth century, it subsequently burned down in the great fire of Fustat around A.D. 750. It was restored in the eighth century and has been renovated many times since then. The Church is dedicated to St. Sergius and St. Bacchus—two Roman soldier-saints who were martyred during the fourth Century in the reign of Roman Emperor Maximilan. The most interesting feature is the crypt where Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus are said to have rested. The crypt is 10 meters deep and, when Nile levels are high, is often flooded.
