This is one of the nicest parts of the city for a leisurely walk. It stretches about one kilometer, from the Estación Marítima (Ferry Station) to Puerto Chico (Small Port). The visit starts at the monument to the 500 people who lost their lives in 1893, when a freighter called the Machichaco exploded in the harbor. Another disaster, the 1941 fire, is also commemorated near the Jardines de Pereda (Pereda Gardens). A little further down is the Palacete del Embarcadero, a beautiful building and venue for all sorts of cultural activities.
The Paseo ends at Puerto Chico with more sculptures, this time inspired by the raqueros, children who used to dive naked into the bay in the 1940s to retrieve coins thrown in by passers-by.
