This is one of the biggest festivals in Cusco, during which people flood the city's main streets and squares. Dating from the period of the Incas, the celebration originally involved exhuming some 12 mummified rulers, which were carried around the empire's main Plaza. With the arrival of the Spaniards however, this festival was dramatically changed, becoming a procession of the different saints from the churches of Cusco. This modified ceremony continues today, with the figures of 13 saints that are carried through the streets in a procession celebrated every May or June.
