Helps if you know some Hungarian
The main exhibit here is the entire history of Hungary, and so much of it is really fascinating. Unfortunately, about half-way through they stop having explanations in English, and even if your Hungarian is good, it can be hard to figure everything out. The 20th century stuff is great, especially all the old communist propaganda posters (many of which are for sale in the gift shop). And seeing how admission is free, what have you got to lose? I highly recommend it if you want to understand the country you're in a little bit more.

Great war-time propaganda!
I'm not much of a museum person and am not particularly interested in Hungarian history. The Hungarian National Museum, however, captured my attention, mainly with all of its World War I and II collections. The war-time propaganda alone is worth the visit.

Will definitley go again.
Very impressed, excellent layouts, quite a bit of english written information, but could have done with a bit more. Some of the exibits were visually amazing, like Skeletons in graves below floor level, lit with concealed lighting and covered with very clean plate glass. Fantastic catalogue of human history in europe over the centuries. not to be missed. As with most places we visited the staff were "Severe", (we think a legacy of their past). Not many speak english but you can by everywere.
