In 1536, the Flemish Franciscan Jodoco Rique, started the construction of this temple near the place where the indigenous people traded their wares. The mudejar ceilings in the choir, the central nave, the major altar, the side chapels and the pulpit are of exceptional quality and beauty. Next to the church there are two chapels: La Capilla de Buenaventura and La Capilla de la Virgen de Dolores, the latter having been consecrated to the Virgin by the indigenous Francisco Cantuña. Outside the church you can buy religious images, candles, scapulars, and various other products of this sort. The church is located in the middle of a square where shoe-shiners and street-vendors gather to sell food, drinks, or even warm clothes in case the capital's unpredictable weather gives you a surprise.
