Located in the heart of the historical center of Quito, right in front of the Palacio del Gobierno, this church was consecrated in 1572. On the 30th of March, 1877, Quito's Archbishop Ignacio Checa y Barba was poisoned here with strychnine, which had been dissolved into his wine. Many people relate the story of the rooster that lives on the dome of this temple, claiming it attacks the drunken people who dare to insult the church in the early mornings on their way home. This is one of the most traditional and important churches in Quito. It is often the venue for the funerals and remembrance services when a famous political or cultural personality dies. The cathedral houses some important items of religious art, and its architecture makes it part of the cultural heritage of the city.
