Although this cemetery is located at the extreme southern edge of Quito's historical center, it is nonetheless, fairly easy to access, thanks to the various modes of transport which run there. It was started in 1872, but did not open to the public until 1900. It is the final resting-place of some of the most important public personalities of Ecuador, among them various ex-presidents of the Republic such as José María Velasco Ibarra, who held presidential office for five different terms. Usually, there are fresh flowers by the tombstone, brought by his admirers. It is very simple but this place contains part of the city's history. Admission is free.
