This square, officially known as Plaza Velarde, is one of Santander's best-known architectural features. It is in the center of the city's commercial area and owes much of its fame to the fact that between 1951 and 1991 Santander's International Festival took place here.
The square was constructed after the fire in 1941 which razed a good part of the city. It is an elegant structure, open on the south side and surrounded by arcaded buildings. Santander's main shopping thoroughfares, Calles San Francisco, Juan de Herrera, Rualasal and Avenida Calvo Sotelo, all lead off it. Several important buildings are located here, including the headquarters of Caja Cantabria, one of the region's principal banks, government offices and the tourist office.
