Santander's Ayuntamiento (City Council) is located right in the heart of the city, surrounded by shops and businesses. It was built in two phases: the first in 1907 and the second in 1964. In both cases, construction was carried out according to the plans drawn up by Julio María Zapata (1898). The three-storey ashlar stone building is somewhat eclectic, architecturally speaking, but many features show a clear Modernist influence. The city's coat of arms stands out above the clockface on the facade. Inside, frescos by Fernando Calderón are worthy of note for their depictions of everyday life at the turn of the century.
