Hidden away down a narrow lane, Shizuka is a grungy, graffiti-covered izakaya (Japanese tavern) popular with writers Kansai Time Out meets here monthly, office workers and couples who gather for the cheap food and drinks, as well as the informal, homely atmosphere. Beer, sake and shochu flow with the large and varied a la carte menu of finger food. Bring a pen if you are feeling inspired to add something profound to the walls. There is a lot of scribbling on all the walls of the place, which is divided into little cubbies and private rooms. Bottled Asahi beer, hot and cold sake, and shochu make up the alcoholic drinks. Foods include: potato and green salads, fried potatoes, fried fish, tofu and natto (fermented beans).
