This 25000 square meter park is the biggest in the city and surrounds the Palacio Real (Royal Palace). Until the end of the 19th century it was virtually deserted, housing only a hermitage dedicated to Saint Magdalena and the defensive castle which overlooks the bay. Nowadays it contains a zoo on the rocky cliffs to the northern end, with lions, seals, penguins and polar bears. You can also take a look at the galleons once belonging to Vital Alsar, a Santander sailor and adventurer. This is one of the city's best-loved parks, offering lovely walks and superb views of the bay, El Sardinero and the open sea.
