Built to thwart demons from the northeast, and the home of Tendai (Buddhist esoteric tantric) sect, Enryakuji is divided into three distinct sections: Toto: Site of the Konpon Chudo (the main hall rebuilt in 1642), the former entry gate (Monju-ro), the eastern pagoda, the temple's museum, (Kokuhoden), and the Daikodo. The Jodoin which has the grave of the founding priest, Saicho, is in-between Toto and Saito: precinct which includes the Shaka-do and the western pagoda, the Jogyodo and the Hokkedo. Yokawa: includes the Yokawa-chudo, the Shikido, and the Eshindo.
