The Agua Santa Avenue is one of the main thoroughfares leading into the city, and on reaching its base you can see a hill rising up in the distance, covered with older houses (most dating from the thirties), some built of wood, all seemingly clinging precariously to the hillside. On the hill's northern flank is the Presidential Palace, one of the retreats serving the needs of Chile's elected Heads of State (if the flag is up then the president is in). The hill itself takes its name from Brunet Yarur Castle, built by the industrialist Enrique Schroeders, which now belongs to the Chilean Carabineros (uniformed police).
