Set in beautiful surroundings on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, this magnificent 538-hectare garden features a rich diversity of indigenous South African plants. The lower portion of Kirstenbosch consists of large flowerbeds and expansive lawns while higher up the slopes, the cultivated garden gives way to natural forest and fynbos. At the main entrance an impressive conservatory houses a wide variety of plants from other climatic regions of South Africa. There is a restaurant, an information desk and a great shop. Come summertime, the gardens host the annual, magical Sunset Concerts.

Kirstenbosch nestles at the foot of the easternmost slopes of Table Mountain. Its National Botanical Garden includes a conservatory, a cultivated garden ideal for tranquil walking or picnicking and a mountainous nature reserve offering challenging day hikes for the energetically inclined. During the summer months, Kirstenbosch throws open its gates to welcome music-lovers. Performances (by acts as notable as the Three Tenors and Il Divo) are held at sunset on Sunday evenings and couples and families gather at dusk to listen to music under the stars. Most guests bring a picnic and some good Cape wine to enhance the experience. Sundays at the garden also bring a craft market at the nearby Stone Cottages, so if you arrive early you can shop before the concert begins. This is the place to be on Sunday mornings! Visit the Kirstenbosch Craft Market to buy beautiful fine quality handmade goods. On every last Sunday of the month, roughly 200 artisans and craftsman gather to put up stalls to display and sell their products. It's at such places that you will come across some unique items and hidden treasures. If you are a tourist, get here early for the best stuff and do not forget to bargain. You will also find a variety of food stalls at the market, and you can let your kids take a pony ride while you are busy picking stuff for home! The market is closed in the months of winter and in December it takes place on the 2nd and 3rd Sunday.
